Tagging and del.icio.us

Watson Library on del.icio.us

What is del.icio.us?

Del.icio.us lets you

  • Keep all of your internet favorites (bookmarks) in one easily-accessible place - great for traveling &/or working from multiple computers
  • Use tags to describe your favorites
  • Share your favorites with others
  • Discover new sites through shared tags

Read more at - http://del.icio.us/about/

How do I use del.icio.us?

  • Create an account
  • Import your favorites from your web browser (instructions are under “settings”)
  • Begin tagging!
  • Add new entries from shared tags, followed links, networks and fans

Organizing tags

  • All of your tags, and the options for organizing them, appear on the right side of the page in a grey box.
  • Tags can be shown as an alphabetical list or as a cloud where more frequent tags appear in slightly larger and slightly darker text.
  • Like-tags can be sorted together into bundles. Click on the ‘bundle tags’ link at the bottom of the grey box and follow directions (be sure to save!)
  • Bundled tags can be hidden or not – click on the name of the bundle (or the grey arrow next to it) to hide or unhide.

Networking and Fans:

  • Networking is a way of grouping users. You can then share links among a smaller set of del.icio.us users.
  • Fans are people who have added you to their network.

    • Things to keep in mind / Helpful hints

  • When importing, del.icio.us gives you the option of using your existing favorites breakdown to create your first tags. You are also given the option to use the tag ‘imported’ and have the name of whatever folder they had in your favorites.

  • Del.icio.us does not currently allow for multiword tags. You can get around this by putting words together in a single string. (ex: CherryBlossomFestival )

  • Unlike other social tagging sites like Librarything and Flikr, punctuation is not needed to separate tags.

  • Use full-screen edit to select from all of your tags and receive recommendations for tags from del.icio.us and other users. To open the full-screen edit page for a link, right click the ‘edit’ link and select “Open in New Window” (remember to save and then close the window)

  • Del.icio.us lists the most recent entries first

  • There is currently no duplicate checking or link verification in del.icio.us.
